Bicycle & Helmet Safety

Bicycle Safety

70 to 80 percent of fatal bicycle crashes involve head injuries. Statistics show that bicycle helmets could prevent four out of five serious head injuries.

Keep your kids safe on wheels with these safety and maintenance tips:

  • Make sure your kids wear their helmets the right way—centered on top of their heads, with the straps snugly buckled all the time.
  • Don’t let children go without helmets just because they’re riding in the neighborhood.
  • Helmets should fit correctly and should be appropriate for the activity (biking vs. skating, etc.).
  • Teach your kids the rules of the road: Ride with traffic, not against it; use hand signals when turning; obey all traffic signs and lights.
  • Have your kids wear bright clothing or reflective material so people can see them. Discourage them from riding when it’s dark.
  • Don’t allow the use of headphones when your kids ride or skate so they can hear traffic around them.
  • Regularly check their bikes, skates, scooters and/or skateboards for damage.

Helmet Safety

Your kids have something very special — their brains! They only get one, so make sure it’s protected by wearing a helmet every time they ride bikes, skates, scooters or skateboards.

Call 314-678-5474 to make an appointment for a helmet fitting and follow these helmet fitting and wearing tips:

  • You may think, “It’s not going to happen to me,” but think again. Bike, skate, scooter and skateboard crashes happen all the time!
  • Falls don’t mean just cuts and broken bones—you could injure your brain and never recover.
  • Crashes can be out of your control. Even if you are a skilled rider, a car or another rider can crash into you.
  • The sidewalks and streets are not any safer near your home. Wear a helmet even if you’re just going around the block.
  • Remember, brain injuries can last forever and limit your ability to walk, talk, think, see and play sports.
  • Parents, set an example. Wear your helmet 100% of the time.
