Fetal Heart Program Capabilities

From prenatal diagnosis to delivery and surgery after birth, our Fetal Heart Program is a nationwide leader in innovative care.

Early Diagnosis

As early as 18 weeks gestation, our doctors can accurately detect heart conditions through a fetal echocardiogram (fetal ECHO). This detailed ultrasound focuses on the intrauterine growth and development of your baby’s heart and great vessels. This helps us and your family better prepare for the delivery of your special baby.

Complex Deliveries

For babies facing more complex deliveries, our team of surgeons and maternal fetal medicine specialists can perform Cesarean section and EXIT (ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure) deliveries at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.

EXIT procedures allow our team to perform life-saving procedures on your baby before cutting the umbilical cord. This gives your baby time to stabilize while still attached to the life-support of your placenta. If additional intervention is needed, your baby is next door to the pediatric operating room and the pediatric hybrid cardiac catheterization suite. This state-of-the-art suite allows our heart experts to conduct advanced diagnostic procedures and fix complex heart problems, in the same room and in one procedure, for safer care and a faster recovery.
