Preparing for your baby and the changes he or she will bring is a big part of your pregnancy. There are times of excitement and times of overwhelming emotion. At SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee, we combine a comfortable, home-like environment with quality, experienced obstetrical care, so you can be confident that you and your baby are in good hands.
Our new Women’s Center includes six labor and delivery rooms and 18 private postpartum suites. The new postpartum suites provide mothers with plenty of room and privacy following delivery. The hospital also has a Level II Nursery, which can provide appropriate medical attention to healthy, premature and special needs babies not requiring transfer to a neonatal intensive care unit.
The Women’s Center is located in the newly built West Tower of SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee.
Family-Centered Care
During your labor and for a few hours after delivery, your nurse will be checking on both you and your baby very frequently. Families and friends may be asked to allow private time for the new mother and her baby.
Your baby will be placed skin to skin immediately after delivery and will remain with you until after the first breastfeeding. We encourage visitors to allow time after delivery for the family to bond with the baby.
Your baby will room with you for your entire stay. This allows families optimal time to bond with their baby and to learn how to care for and breastfeed their baby.
Breastfeeding Support
We support your decision to breastfeed your baby and offer our assistance to help you get started. Our breastfeeding classes can help prepare you before your little one arrives, and the Lactation Department is ready to help with any questions or concerns about breastfeeding during your postpartum recovery or after your discharge from the hospital. Childbirth and Breastfeeding Classes
SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee has a variety of prenatal classes to help you prepare for your new baby. We recommend you sign up for classes early in your second or third trimester. Classes are designed for first-time parents or those who would like a refresher prior to delivery. We encourage you to bring a support person with you to each of our classes.
